EMS for athletes — in-season conditioning without overtraining

During competitive season, athletes face a problem most fitness content ignores: traditional strength training compounds the fatigue from games, matches, and races. Add a heavy gym session on top of a Tuesday match and a Sunday game, and recovery never quite catches up.


Elite teams have used EMS for decades to solve this. Here's how, and how amateur athletes can apply the same logic.


The in-season strength dilemma


In off-season, athletes can do high-volume strength work — multiple heavy sessions per week, deliberate progressive overload. The body adapts and gets stronger.


In-season, that approach breaks. The athlete is already dealing with high training load (practices, games, travel). Adding heavy lifting on top causes systemic fatigue, increases injury risk, and degrades performance in actual competition.


But the alternative — doing no strength work in-season — leads to muscular detraining over the course of a 6-month season. Athletes lose strength they spent the off-season building.


EMS sits between these extremes. It delivers high-quality muscle stimulus with minimal systemic fatigue cost.


Why EMS works in-season


A 20-minute EMS session recruits significant muscle fibre but with substantially less central nervous system fatigue than a 60-minute heavy gym session. The athlete walks out trained but not crushed.


Recovery from EMS is also typically faster than from heavy lifting. Most athletes can do an EMS session 24–48 hours before a competition without performance impact, where the same window for heavy lifting would be too tight.


And the localised muscle activation means specific groups (glutes, hamstrings, core) can be targeted without loading the joints that compete the next day.


The basic in-season protocol


Most elite teams use roughly this pattern. Adjust to your own schedule.


Two EMS sessions per week, 20 minutes each. One session 48 hours pre-game (Thursday for a Saturday game) at moderate intensity to maintain strength baseline. One session 24 hours post-game (Sunday for a Saturday game) at lower intensity to accelerate recovery.


The pre-game session uses the "Strength" preset, focused on the muscle groups most relevant to the sport. For football: posterior chain (glutes, hamstrings, lower back). For basketball: full body with emphasis on legs. For combat sports: rotational core and shoulders.


The post-game session uses the "Recovery" preset, lower intensity, focused on the muscles most worked in the game. The goal is increased blood flow and waste clearance, not new training stimulus.


Where this falls apart


EMS doesn't replace sport-specific training. A footballer still needs to practice football. A swimmer still needs to swim. EMS is a tool for general strength maintenance, not skill development.


EMS doesn't replace cardiovascular conditioning. Aerobic and anaerobic capacity for sport require sport-specific energy system work. The suit doesn't do that for you.


EMS's benefits for explosive sports (sprinting, jumping) are real but not as large as for strength sports. Track athletes still need plyometrics and sprint work; EMS supplements but doesn't substitute.


For amateur athletes


You don't need a sports science department to apply this. The pattern translates well to weekend warriors and recreational athletes:


If you're training for a marathon: 1–2 EMS sessions per week during build-up, focused on hamstrings, glutes, and core. Drop to 1 session per week in the final 4 weeks before the race.


If you play recreational tennis or padel: 2 EMS sessions per week, with one 48 hours before your match day at moderate intensity, one mid-week at higher intensity for general strength.


If you're a CrossFit / general fitness athlete: 2 EMS sessions per week alongside your regular programming, scheduled on lower-volume days.


If you're cycling for distance or competing in triathlon: 1 EMS session per week focused on legs and core, scheduled on a rest day from cycling, never within 48 hours of a long ride or race.


Recovery — the underrated use case


For amateur athletes coming back from injury, EMS at low intensity is one of the safest ways to maintain muscle activation without re-aggravating the injury. Most physios in our network use EMS for ACL recovery, hamstring re-injury prevention, and rotator cuff rehab.


If you're working through an injury, talk to your physio about EMS as part of the protocol. Don't self-prescribe — the right protocol depends on the specific injury and stage of healing.


Bottom line for athletes


EMS is a strength-maintenance tool that fits in-season schedules where heavy lifting can't. It's not magic and it's not a substitute for sport-specific work. Used as a supplement to a well-designed training program, it lets you keep the strength you built in pre-season without compounding fatigue during competition.


Two sessions per week. One pre-event, one post-event. That's the protocol. The rest is consistency.
